On Oct. 29, Joliet Junior College held its Fall Festival at the H-Center bridge, where free tarot and palm readings were available to any students. Free chili, Celsius, and Bubbl’r samples were also given to the number of students who attended after signing in.
Tarot reader Jacob Mayfield began his journey in tarot reading when he was a child. He provides virtual tarot readings, workshops, and coaching on his site and travels nationwide for many in-person events.
“I got my first tarot cards when I was 10,” Mayfield said. “I learned through mentors and research.”
Learning the meaning of each card was no small task. Mayfield had been studying tarot for over two decades.
“Twenty-five years,” Mayfield said, “but I had to go to school to learn professionally.”
Throughout his journey in Tarot, Mayfield never once had a negative encounter with anyone, despite his knowledge that many people do not agree with what he does.
“Over the last 25 years,” Mayfield said, “I’ve had positive encounters. I have a positive energy, and I tend to attract those kinds of people.”
The event’s astrology reader, Brandon Ramsey, had been studying how to read astrology since 2010. Ramsey explained how he looks at an astrology chart and how it matches with the client’s soul’s wants or what they must learn.
“I started to study in 2010,” Ramsey said, “I did it professionally (full time) since 2019. I look at the astrology chart, and I see what the chart is aligning with the soul’s desire or lesson.”
The fest also featured a palm reader, Shane Brown, who has been practicing palm reading for approximately five years. However, Brown hasn’t done professional reading within that time frame.
“I’ve read about it,” Brown said, “but I haven’t done professional reading.”
Students who attended this event may have had an interest in learning how to read cards, astrology, or palms. Brown encouraged those who are eager to learn more about these practices to dive deeper.
“If you are really interested in palm reading,” Brown said. “Jacob has written a book on palm reading that I helped edit and publish. It’s nothing scary and has nothing to do with ghosts.”
Some attendees at the fall fest had an interest in not only the readings but also the free chili being served. JJC student, Enrique Rangel, had come to enjoy everything that was offered.
“I saw that there was merchandise and there was chili,” Rangel said, “and I’m a big fan of chili.”
Rangel shared his feelings on the topic of the services offered, feeling that they would help him in his life.
“I feel like I’ve always had a weird sensation of where my life is gonna go,” Rangel said. “It would be good to confirm it.”
Not only was free chili given, but samples of Celsius and Bubbl’r were also provided. Pepsi representative John Sowards wanted the students of JJC to know what the products were.
“Pepsi is new to the college this year,” Sowards said. “We want to be out here to engage the students and show what our products are.”
