At the beginning of fall 2025 semester, everything was going to plan. I had figured out my class schedule, workdays, and even a trip that I had been planning for over a year. My plan was to be as busy as possible– accomplishing some of my academic goals while maintaining a healthy balance between work, life, and school.
But in late August, after leaving a double shift at work and coming home to take my dog for a walk, I tripped and fell down my basement stairs.
I was heading down to grab a jacket from my basement when I took a wrong step and fell at the top of the staircase. As I landed halfway down, I felt a sharp pain and a pop near my left foot. I knew right away that I had done something wrong. I felt the pain immediately and realized I was going to have to go to the hospital.
My trip to the hospital confirmed what I already expected: I had broken my leg. What I wasn’t expecting, however, was that the injury would require surgery. It was technically a closed fibular fracture, but it was close enough to my ankle to be considered an ankle injury and wouldn’t heal properly without surgery to repair it.
After the surgery, the next few months were uncertain. It was a guessing game as to whether or not I was going to be able to follow through with everything that I had planned.
The best decision I could make was to withdraw from my current courses as a way to give myself some time to heal. Once I was a few weeks out from surgery, I felt a lot better but still needed the time to let my foot heal on its own. I am currently in physical therapy three times a week, and I plan to retake those courses this upcoming semester, giving myself the best chance of getting back on course with my studies.
Going through this experience has taught me that life’s unexpected plans are inevitable, and for anyone going through a similar experience, it is important to remain optimistic.
In times of unexpected detours, your resilience will be revealed. I had spent so much time planning a set schedule, only to watch most of it derail by one simple misstep (literally).
I felt as though all my effort had been wasted. But ultimately, my injury forced me to slow down and give myself a break, prioritizing my health. In that time, I was able to learn a new hobby in special effects makeup that I really love and gained a lot of new opportunities that I hadn’t previously expected.
So now, as I prepare for the upcoming semester with a renewed sense of determination, I am not only preparing for the classes I will be retaking, but also for some new opportunities as well.
While at first, I was disappointed in the outcome of what had happened, I now know that it was only a small setback, as well as an important opportunity to grow and learn.
This is an important lesson for anyone, because oftentimes there are unexpected scenarios that change our plans. However, it is important to look at those situations with optimism, because uncertainty isn’t necessarily a setback. It can be an opportunity for personal growth in ways we never could have expected.
