As the season begins to wind down, the Joliet Junior College men’s and women’s track teams are shifting their focus to closing out strong.
With just two meets remaining, including one on Saturday, April 25, before nationals on May 7, the Wolves are entering the final stretch of their outdoor season with momentum built from earlier performances.
“This is probably the best team we’ve ever had as far as chemistry, work ethic, and being together as one,” Head Coach Jeff DeGraw said. “Even though we’re separate teams, it’s one of the best groups we’ve had.”
That chemistry has remained a consistent theme throughout the season. Athletes have helped set the tone for the limited outdoor season.
“Their work ethic is phenomenal,” DeGraw said. “Whether it’s a 7 a.m. practice or 2 in the afternoon, they show up and get their work done.”
DeGraw said part of building that culture comes from keeping the environment enjoyable. He shares stories and lessons from former athletes, as well as his own experiences, to connect with the team.
“We joke around, we have fun, that’s key,” DeGraw said. “I tell them stories and give them past experiences from athletes who’ve been through the program. This isn’t a job. This is something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.”
As the postseason approaches, the focus has shifted from prep to execution.
“All the really hard work is done now,” DeGraw said. “Now it’s about finishing strong.”
Staying healthy has become a priority for the team, particularly among the men’s sprinters who have dealt with injuries.
“We’ve just got to stay healthy,” DeGraw said. “I think they’re pretty much back now—we just need to keep them that way.”
Consistency in key events will also be critical, especially in relays.
“In the 4×1, we’ve got to make sure we get the baton around,” he said.
The Wolves enter the final meets with strong national standings. On the women’s side, Ka’Mhary Scott and Corrine Thomas are among the top-ranked athletes, while according to Degraw, multiple relay teams hold number 1 rankings nationally.
In the field events, athletes like Jyaveion Green are coming in to help. The All-American high jumper recently had a strong performance recently and is expected to contribute heading into nationals.
Despite dealing with inconsistent weather throughout the season, the team has shown they continue to perform.
“We haven’t had a meet with good weather yet,” DeGraw said.
With nationals approaching, the team’s focus remains clear.
“Our goal is to finish in the top three,” DeGraw said. “But that only happens when every individual does their job.”
As the Wolves prepare for their final meets, the emphasis is on staying sharp, staying healthy, and making the most of their opportunities before heading to nationals.
